The 12th. Annual Boston Beara Society social was held recently in Florian Hall in Dorchester. This year, it was a delightful mixture of enlightenment and entertainment with the renowned scholar Dr. Aidan Breen giving a wonderful presentation to a capacity audience on the history of early monastic settlements within the Beara area.
That was followed afterwards by a display of the best of Irish dancing courtesy of the Forbes School of Irish Dance. The darlings of the afternoon were the four baby dancers who strutted their stuff in true Riverdance style and accordingly, earned a rousing applause from the audience after their performance.
If that was not enough, there was dancing to the music of Dan Hallissey and an impromptu sing-along with each singer being better than the next. Of particular entertainment interest was that man from Kenmare (he left in 1964!) Timmy Crowley, who had the audience holding their sides in laughter with his poetry and jokes. Timmy would be a most welcome guest to return back again next year.
All in all, there is a credit due to the Boston Beara committee members for putting together such a wonderful evening of entertainment. Those members are Pat Dwyer, Mike Dwyer, Roger Egan, Pat McCarthy, Mary Sullivan Kelly, Alice Coakley, Finbar O'Sullivan, Derven O'Shea, Brian Crowley, John Harrington & Kathy Sullivan .
Florian Hall, as usual, provided an excellent meal and the general consensus was that it was a wonderful day's entertainment.
