Sunday, Feb 28 marked the date for the Annual Communion Breakfast for AOH Myles Scully Division #1 Yonkers . It was held in St. Josephs Seminary in Yonkers . The AOH, Ancient Order of Hibernian's is a Catholic Fraternal Organization, whose roots date back to Ireland in the 1600s.
The Ancient Order of Hibernian's is a Catholic, Irish American Fraternal Organization founded in New York City May 4,1836. The Order can trace its roots back to a parent organization, of the same name, which has existed in Ireland for over 300 years. However, while the organizations share a common thread, the North American A.O.H. is a separate and much larger organization. The AOH began in Ireland , to protect the church, from those who oppressed it, and was later carried to the United States in the 1840s, protecting the church from the Know Nothings. Today it helps to raise money for various charities.
Mass was celebrated by Bishop Gerald Walsh, followed by a full hot breakfast. It was also a day for celebrating achievements. Hibernian of the Year, John Hyland, was recognized for all the help and guidance he has given to AOH Myles Scully Division #1 for the last several years. Speaker for this event was John T. Dunleavy, NYC St. Patricks Day Parade Chairman. He gave a discussion on the history of the parade, including some very funny anecdotes.
The event concluded with a presentation by Kevin Ellis, current divisional president, recognizing past President James Walsh for his many years of service. Guests included Mayor of Yonkers, Phil Amicone, and his wife Kay, Deputy Mayor Bill Regan, Judge Arthur Doran and various officers and their families from Westchester, Bronx and New York county AOH .
