MSSL Cup
Kinvara 2 Bhoys FC 0
Brighton rivals Kinvara and Bhoys FC met in the MSSL Cup on Sunday last, with a quarter-final berth in the competition at stake. Bhoys FC have been going well in MSSL Division 2, topping the table with some good results, led by Davey Coen and Gary Keane in the middle of the park.
Kinvara have yet to make an impression in MSSL Division 1 with an Emigrant Cup success their only bright spot on the season thus far.
Kinvara enjoyed the best of the opening exchanges, putting Conor Hannick and the Bhoys backline under pressure. Leo O'Connor fired home the opener for Kinvara on 16 minutes after nice work by UCC man Mark Irwin. The Bhoys enjoyed the better of the second half however, narrowly missing equalisers from Tom Walsh and John Hickey.
Kinvara were able to withstand the pressure and added to there lead on 89 minutes, when a mix-up in the Bhoys defense allowed Egor Kharakozov to score direct from a corner.
Troubles Continue For Revs
LA Galaxy 1 New England Revolution 0
Following an ignominious exit from the Open Cup in midweek, the Revolution fell to a single goal defeat on the left coast on Saturday.
Making his debut for his new club just three days after being acquired, Alecko Eskandarian netted the goal which led the LA Galaxy to a 1-0 win over New England on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center.
Eskandarian who only started the match because Alan Gordon suffered an injury in pre-game warm-ups was traded to the Galaxy from Chivas USA on Wednesday and immediately made an impact with the game-winner.
It was New Englands (4-5-4, 16 pts.) first loss to LA (4-3-9, 21 pts.) in a regular-season match in five years.
The already shorthanded visitors were dealt a further injury blow before the match even began, as defender Chris Tierney suffered a sprained left knee in training on Friday and was forced out of the lineup. As a result, midfielder Wells Thompson was inserted into the left back position, marking Thompsons first-ever start as a defender in an MLS match.
The Galaxy pressed for an early goal from the opening whistle and the hosts were rewarded for their efforts in just the eighth minute, when Eskandarian scored his first goal for his new club. Defender Todd Dunivant created the goal with a lofted cross from the left wing to Eskandarian, who met the ball near the penalty spot with a right-footed volley, which he placed low inside the left post.
The game settled down following the early goal and chances were limited for both sides in the middle stages of the opening half. Kheli Dubes deflected drive which sailed just wide in the 24th minute represented New Englands best chance, while LA defender Omar Gonzalezs 30th-minute header was saved by Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis, who was well-positioned.
